Will the portable unit fit on top of the panel cover in a way such that the antenna's do not contact the canopy? Looks like they will touch... and the manual says that is an improper antenna installation.

Any other ideas on where to mount the portable in a Discus 2A or Ventus 2a fuselage?

They will touch, but that still works. According to Dave Nadler (and common sense) the ESD thing is a non-issue. I have had my portable since Uvalde last year, mounted in exactly the same way with no problem.
