I think I see a pattern here. Maybe if you bought a truck with a real
engine instead of one of those V-6 things, you would have better luck.
I had an S-10 for a while with the GM V-6 and it was great, but then
again, the engine was appropriately sized for the smaller truck.

True story: My brother and I each drive late model Jeep Wranglers.
Mine is the straight 6 version which is known to make good power for a
rig of this size. His is the 4 cylinder version, which you would expect
to be more efficient, but he has never gotten any better mileage than I
do. The problem is that the Wrangler is heavy for its size, shaped like
a brick, and needs lots of power to reach and sustain highway speeds.
You have to run the 4 cylinder rig so hard just to keep up with traffic
that the two engines get around the same mileage in normal use. For
city driving, he still has a small edge but only a couple mpg. In
reality though, they could both use a V-8. 8^)

I think something similar may be at play with your V-6 trying to move a
full size truck. But then what do I know about new trucks? I'm still
driving the 3/4 ton Chevy pickup (350 V-8 powered) which my dad bought
new in 1973. It gets 10 mpg under ALL operating conditions. Never had
a problem with power though. 8^)
