One source on the web states that the pilot is Peter Townsend, one time
squeeze of the UK queen's sister. However, the IWM have the same picture (or
a similar one taken on the same photo op) and make no mention of the pilot's
identity.

Does anyone know the story and, if it is Townsend, did he suffer from a
relevant condition or did he somehow sneak around King's Regulations?

Enquiring minds want to know (or at least are idly wondering).
