Oh, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!
John, I admire your preserverence in answering
this stuff, but in fact
the FDR arragned Pearl Harbor (or at least knew
about it) is a rather
common belief. William Manchester, who wrote
a very good biography of
MacArthur, also wrote a memoir of his own role
in the Pacific War. In
doing so, he visits Pearl etc, and he makes
the nearly-flat statement
that Washington knew about the raid in advance.
So here's a brilliant
writer, then professor at Wesleyan, and careful
and convincing
biographer, coming out with the great myth of
1941.
Not to mention the JFK assassination (by the
CIA, wasn't it?).
9/11 is certain to come to the same end. The
holes in the argument are
obvious to us, because the events are so vivid,
but they won't be
obvious to the next generation.

You'd be suprised at the number of PH conspiracy theories: I had to look
at them as a grad student in a Historigraphy course. All sorts of wild claims
with little evidence to back them up. Some of those making the claims had
made similar statements about the U.S. entry into World War I as well. Gordon
Prange demolished them pretty thoroughly in his books.
