OK, I simplified a bit. Indeed the attachment ends must match, I
presume that is a given. But having installed automotive belts in an
aircraft in the past (which were later removed), the IA stated that
while the automotive selts are certified to a higher G-loading than
aviation belts, the belts must have the approved tag or they cannot
be installed in certified aircraft.

Go figure, the FAA wants you to install inferior parts in aircraft.

Do you know that those auto and aviation belts were certified using the
same standards? I suspect the standards are different.
