SE is the authors original recommendation, but a good case is made for the Explorer.

Unfortunately, the SSA tracker often does not show Delorme altitude at contests as a "bug" is causing some issues. But the Delorme is a vastly superior product to the SPOT in almost every form of measure.

My crew really appreciates being able to see the whole picture (altitude) as I fly. The cost of the plan is only slightly more than SPOT and you can go into a $10 per month "maintenance" mode for th winter months to further reduce annual spend.
