I remember accounts how P 38 pilots were grateful to
transitioned to P 47's. Suddenly they could actually
dogfight again in a plane that could dish out a lot of
punishment and take even more. It was simpler to fly
and maintain, and could excel at ground attack missions
that the P38s were barred from.
