You have a very interesting and plausible explanation. Ours was a
172H and it never did it again as far as I knew (over several years).
Didn't the single-tank-above-~8000 fuel placard AD apply only to 172s?

I think the concept of a vent problem is better than non-turbulent
air. Thanks for the long post!
