Half joking, but why would this not work for local flights?

You need to experience the drag on a two-seater with only one canopy. A
2-33 L/D would look pretty good by comparison.

Having flown a PIK-20 with one undercarriage door missing, or a Dart 17R
with the centre fairing accidentally fallen off, I agree the effect is
worse than you hope (especially the Dart)
