WILLIAM PHILLIPS William Grant Phillips, 59, of Las Vegas, passed away
Oct. 18, 2008, in an airplane crash, in Parowan, Utah. He was born
July 7, 1949, in Boulder City, to William and Shirley Phillips. Bill
graduated from Boulder City High School in 1967. He earned a four-year
Dorothea Brinker Scholarship. He was on the Dean's Honor List and
graduated with a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of
Las Vegas in 1971. He earned a masters of science degree in physics
from the University of Las Vegas in 1973. Bill completed his graduate
course work and thesis in theoretical physics with a straight "A"
average. His theoretical research was one of applying Einstein's
General Theory of Relativity to a previously unsolved astrophysical
problem. The solution of this problem was published and he received
worldwide recognition among scientific communities dealing with this
sort of work. Bill was employed by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency and, in 1974, he received the EPA Bronze Medal for his
outstanding service in a joint government industry. In 1987, the EPA
sent him to the University of Washington, Seattle, where he earned a
second masters degree in health physics. He became a Board-certified
health physicist to study the nuclear waste repository at Yucca
Mountain. He was retired from the EPA. He was an experienced airline
transport pilot and passionate about flying. His fascination with
airplanes started when he was 10 years old. He holds 10 licenses to
fly various aircraft. Bill married Janice Lanuti Dec. 24, 1987. To
those who knew and loved Bill, he was a brother, and a loyal friend.
He loved children and they loved him. He was brilliant, talented, and
had a great sense of humor. He was also an artist and a pianist. Bill
is survived by his wife, Janice, who was a passenger in the aircraft
when it crashed. She sustained multiple fractures and injuries and is
recovering in a Salt Lake City hospital. Bill is also survived by his
mother, Shirley Phillips of Boulder City; his brother, Robert Phillips
(Lynn); two nephews, Matthew and Christopher of Las Vegas; and his
lifelong friend, Dr. David Elkins. Memorial services will be held when
his wife, Janice recovers.
