Default Video of VOR A approach into MBO in actual

I took a friend up (VFR pilot) to give him a taste of what instrument
flying was about. We did two ILS's over at JAN (Jackson MS) and then a VOR
Alpha back to MBO (Madison MS).

I briefed him that it may be a possibility we may not be able to return to
MBO as ceilings on departure were 700 feet. He understood the
implications.

I took my digital camera so he could video the approaches. This VOR A
approach into MBO, I broke out right at minimums (900 feet). (ASOS had
reported 1000 when I initiated the approach, so I was surprised not to see
the ground while I was descending. Nothing like the magic of instrument
flying when the airport magically shows up where it's suppose to be when
breaking out!!!

I uploaded the VOR Alpha to

VOR alpha approach is second from the bottom. It's a 40 meg file done in
high resolution, so it looks real good in full screen mode. For my DSL, it
took 2 1/2 minutes to download.

The bottom choice was an ILS 34L approach into JAN. I broke out at 1000
feet. The video covers from the final approach fix to landing. Other then
the turbulence, this was one of my better approaches.

As you will see in the VOR A approach, I failed to take into account the
very high winds aloft at 1000 feet (45 knots out of 320) turning to final
and had to make a major correction to get back on course. I can really
appreciate the need for practicing those circling to land approaches
especially with the high winds aloft that I experienced.

Once I got back on course, I had a very stabilized approach in spite of
winds coming out of 340 at 29 knots at the surface. I did a no flaps
landing due to the high winds.

Needless to say, my friend had an eye opener, as he took a lot in. His
eyes were big as saucers after we put the plane to bed.

We spend a total of 1.4 in IMC and 1.7 total flight time.
