Default Giving thanks this Christmas, by Phill Coleman

Giving thanks this Christmas, by Phill Coleman
(First published on 19 December 2000)

Three major wars ago American troops on the field did not enjoy their
Holidays. During the last Christmas year of WW2 the German Army
attacked on a huge front with such force many believed the balance of
victory in Europe would be won by the Nazis. During the most
devastating Thanksgiving and Christmas season of the Korean War over 1
million Chinese troops pushed American lines back to a point recovery
seemed impossible. In the last year of the most numerous infantry
battles of the Vietnam War hundreds of thousands of American troops
hoped the “Christmas Bombing of 1972” would mark the end of Communists
human waves assaults and terrorist rocket attacks on US positions.

This Holiday Season, a equally large percentage of American troops in
comparison to the military populations of the last three major wars
are stationed abroad working to ensure that we at home enjoy a
peaceful Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday.

This Holiday, let us think about and pray for all those who are away
from home and those who never made it back home. Christmas is the
season for charity, peace and thankfulness.

May you, and yours, have a peaceful Christmas.
