Former U.S. air base in Vietnam receives first tourist flights

(EXCERPT) HANOI (AFP) — An air base in central Vietnam used by U.S.
bombers during the Vietnam war received its first domestic flights
Wednesday as the region seeks to bring in much needed tourist dollars,
officials said.

Vietnam Airlines is now offering services from the capital Hanoi, Ho
Chi Minh City and Danang to Cam Ranh, in Khanh Hoa province, bringing
tourists to the beaches of nearby Nha Trang.

More than half a million people visited the beaches and islands off
Nha Trang in 2002, 150,000 of them from overseas.

"Cam Ranh airport was officially opened this morning when it received
an Airbus A320 carrying 133 passengers from Hanoi," said Vo Anh Tu,
