challenge Boeing for defense deals after its commercial success., by

LONDON — It is a rivalry like that of Coke and Pepsi, Hertz and Avis,
McDonald's and Burger King. Airbus, the upstart European aircraft
group, puts together the right mix of chutzpah and government
subsidies, takes on archrival Boeing Co. and becomes leader in the
commercial aircraft market.

Less well-documented has been the strategy of Airbus' parent, European
Aeronautic Defense and Space Co., to use success in commercial
aviation to challenge Boeing in the military market. The plan is
