If a box (exc. xponder) cannot be removed by sliding it out from the
front, then it must be reinstalled fwg repair by an A&P needing a
basis for returning the A/C to service. Meaning it was yellow-tagged
by a repairman FAA authorizes to do so. Where she does slide out,
repairing it is not on the list of owner-maintenance items.


What about buying a same-model, same part# replacement box, new, and
shoving it in to replace defective box? Like replacing a KX-155A
nav/com with another 155a because the 1st one died? All that's
involved is sliding into the tray and securing in place. Airframe log
notation with new serial number sufficient to be covered as owner
maint?
