Some time ago potential purchasers of the (US) PowerFLARM brick were

dealers so it was impossible to make an informed choice.

Butterfly has advised me that no English manual is available yet but
the German manual can be found he

I could not make Babel translate it but my limited German seems to
have allowed me to answer my question on knob functionality. *It
appears that the bundled display, like the 57mm display, has 2
independent rotary knobs one of which also acts as a push button
switch.

The 57mm display includes the alarm and there appears to be a menu
setting to adjust the volume.

Butterfly support advised me there is no brightness control for the
57mm display, it is always full bright. *I assume the same is true of
the bundled display.

Anyone knowing *how to make an internet translation, or willing to
make a human translation, please post.

Your assumption is basically correct. As a native German speaker I
could do a translation, but I don't have the time at the moment to to a
full translation of the manual. But I am willing to answer all
questions, both as a translator for the manual, but also as a 2-year
user of the butterfly display.

Re. the display: it is a transreflective display, i.e. it has no
internal light source, It gets the light from the ambient light, and the
brighter the sun shines on it the brighter the display gets. Trere has
been no situation where I could not read the display (as I do no night
flying).

The thinner of the two rotary knobs has a push button function, an
dependent of the context you are in, there might be different action for
"short" and "long" push of the button. It takes some time to get used to
the concept, but the basic functions are quite inutitive.

In normal flight mode, the outer rotary knob chooses the range
(0.5/1.0/6km/list view), the inner rotary knob moves the cursor from one
target to the next, a short button push shows details of the target
under the cursor. A long button push enters the menu.

If you have further question, please post them here, I will try to
answer them.

I have one of these in my cockpit that I used while flying in the
Hungary last summer. It is really very cool and adds a lot to your
situational awareness. Other displays mostly just provide you the
warning information while this one will show the FLARM aircraft around
you. I liked it an will keep using this display even though I will
have my PowerFLARM sending data to the SN-10 and Oudie.
