flying loose formation just made you a magnet for the fighters,

What does that mean? If you were there and fighters were there they would come
after you no matter what the formation. Period.

Fly loose formation and the fighters are faced with a bunch of single
targets that they can concentrate on and overwhelm one at a time.

We flew loose to and from the target. If fighters appeared we would tighten up.
