If a box (exc. xponder) cannot be removed by sliding it out from the
front, then it must be reinstalled fwg repair by an A&P needing a
basis for returning the A/C to service. Meaning it was yellow-tagged
by a repairman FAA authorizes to do so. Where she does slide out,
repairing it is not on the list of owner-maintenance items.

But for any box really, if an electronics-savvy owner wants to replace
a 25-cent transistor to save $300, what he/she does is wear surgical
gloves and be sure to vaccum out any strand of hair which may have
fallen into the box. Never know when FAA might add DNA testing to its
random enforcement programs and demand cheek swabs on ramp checks. :-)
