Last fighter I flew with flares was the P-51. It had a flare pistol
that could be locked into a port by your left hip and was pointed back
about 45 degrees so that when you fired the flare it would miss the
wing.


Flares are commonly carried as a countermeasure to IR missiles and
discharged from a flare dispenser.
