There is always the debate about ELT in the glider vs. hand held ELT and
now 406 Mhz PLBs.
I think the PLBs are great, but perhaps not everyone wants to go that
far.

One middle ground option could be a Garmin Rino.

One would have to establish with his/her glider club what FRS/GMRS
frequency would be default, but then a searching party would have a
chance to make contact with a downed pilot and once some proximity was
obtained, the GPS location could be sent to home in on the last few miles.
If there was an ELT in the glider, then that should get the search close
enough for the FRS/GMRS to work if the pilot had a Rino w/ his/her chute
were he/she to bail out.
PLBs certainly have advantage of going direct to the location so I
wouldn't suggest the Rino as being better, but just an option.
