Any Badge Claims Using GPS Position Recorder plus Barograph?

HI,

As soaring season in the northern hemisphere slides into our last
month or two of decent weather, I was wondering if anyone has taken
advantage of the newly approved GPS Position Recorder + Barograph
option to submit IGC Badge Claims. We at the SSA in the US are
currently backlogged with claims, so I don't have that data at my
fingertips in terms of documentation method. Wondering if anyone
from other countries would care to comment as well.

Not really looking for editorial content on whether or not GPS
Position Recorder + Barograph makes sense - really just looking for
some annecdotal or hard evidence that folks are taking advantage of
this option.

FWIW, in calendar year 2009, I believe we had only 1 distance claim
submitted using camera and baro. Am wondering if the concept of GPS
Position Recorder as replacement for camera has resonated with
pilots.

None received by the BGA yet. The UK adopted loggers with enthusiasm.
I didn't get any claims with cameras and barographs for the last 6
years or so and most new cross country pilots seem to buy second hand
loggers (mostly EWs) from people who are upgrading to flarms,etc. The
GPS position recorder only makes sense if you already have an old
style barograph.

Although since the BGA only approved two Position Recorders in towards the
end of the season, and it takes a while for word to get around, hardly
surprising.

It may add a bit of value to an old barograph in the back of a club
cupboard, and find a use as legacy EWs cease to work.

New IGC Recorder (calling them loggers will have Ian S. up in arms) = at
least £400.

Position Recorder + second hand barograph = maybe £200. And you know how
generous early club pilots are with cash.

I wish the pilots luck relearning all the things that can go wrong with a
barograph...........

I just bought a FlyWithCE a few weeks ago and if anyone in our club
desires to do a closed course silver distance flight I'll be loaning
it to them. At the moment I've got a loaner logger that I will
probably set up in the club glider if they want to do a closed course
gold distance flight so they can get the Diamond too.

An ATPL has recently joined my gliding club and is going through the
conversion to get bronze and silver. He has just been given a new
approved IGC position recorder (£100 or so), and I have lent him my
old Winter Barograph, so Basil can expect a silver distance claim
soon, if the weather is suitable.

(Basil, thanks for telephone advice that we could do it this way!)

The 'classic' FLARM, without the IGC approval and seal, qualifies as
"Position Recorders" in Germany and France; without an additional
barograph.
Ironically the simplest and most prevalent type of "Position
Recorder"...
If you want to have it approved in your country, just let your
National Gliding Authority know:

FLARM

The Flarm is also approved position recorder including barograph in
Australia. Actually Australia was the first country (NAC) to approve it.

As 3 NACs have approved the Flarm as barograph with their position
recorder approvals, Flarm should be approved as barograph in the entire
World.
