I just bought one of these with the intention to gut it and use it as the
cockpit for a PC flight simulator setup. However, it still seems to work and is fairly interesting to use as it is. However, I have no idea how to use it as it was originally intended; what to set the xponder, ADF, com and nav freqs etc. and what to expect. My google search on it has not turned up much. Has anyone got any suggestions for use or contacts for documentation? Thanks. It's a pretty interesting antique. |

John...
Somewhere around here I have the operating manuals for the 510, and the schematics for the 610 (same box with an ADF [I think] added)... Understanding the transponder is critical... It's actually the programming console... Specific settings for localizer and ILS approaches, for example... The unit came with a set of lesson plans and audio tapes... The tapes would give ATC instructions carefully timed to coincide with progress on your flight if you had the power and airspeeds set right... I played with mine and some of the tapes which were in horrible shape and found that it was almost impossible to get it all timed right... If one understands how to set the transponder functions, it works better with an instructor playing ATC live... If I can find them, I'll send you copies of the docs for the cost of reproducing and shipping... John Price CFII/AGI/IGI http://home.att.net/~jm.price "John Harlow" wrote in message ... John:
Email me and I will pass along a tremendous amount of information to you about both maintenance and proper use of the 510. I used to maintain about 65 of these for Professional Instrument Courses, Inc. Your email address bounced back, although it seemed like a real one! I wouldn't chop it up, if I were you. You would need a letter from your FSDO in order to use it as such, but it is obtainable, if the unit still functions as designed. Wow. That's pretty timely too, as I plan on working on my instrument rating soon. I think you're right about leaving it intact. It's a pretty cool piece of hardware in it's own right - it'd be a real shame to destroy it. It's amazing what they did with a few 741 op amps. Now if I can only figure out how to set up an approach on it... |

I did email you using my 'real' address. The effluent account (aka spam account) was dormant as I hadn't used it in awhile - it's active now. |
