I've been asked to pick up my grandson's friend in Las Vegas at LAS on
Dec. 26. I'll be motoring down in a C-172SP, strictly VFR. I haven't landed at LAS since long before they built a terminal -- back when the Hacienda would send a limo over to pick me up for lunch and take me back to the plane. Any suggestions on convenient plaace to meet? Landing Fees? Other points to consider? I'd rather make the pickup at VGT (North Las Vegas), but that seems to be nixed. If it gets too hard, I'll scrub in a New York minute. |

How about henderson (HND), its below the LAS class B and you wont have to hassle
with the LAS controllers. HND now has 2 runways, a 6000 ft and a 5000 ft, its about 7 miles south of LAS (flying), driving, its just off south las vegas blvd. I live near Henderson, but base my plane out of VGT . Hendrson is much easier to get in and out of if your coming from california or arizona. here is some info on HND http://www.airnav.com/airport/khnd Casey Wilson wrote: I've been asked to pick up my grandson's friend in Las Vegas at LAS on Dec. 26. Henderson (as was pointed out) or VGT are a good option when travelling to the airport is not a problem. when you have to be close to the strip you might fly into LAS. thre are 2 FBOs at LAS, one beeing Signature and I forgot the name of the other one. Flying into LAS was a no-brainer, been there with a C172 and a C182. Handling fee of about $10 was waived when refueling (don't know about your requirements and your legs outbound of Las Vegas). Signature is on the south end of the rwy, so if you want there plan your landing accordingly (long/short landing), same applies for the other FBO. Else it would be a loooong taxiing. Departing brings you in touch with delivery (then ground, etc.). So be prepared for that, but not a problem at all. Flying into LAS is very easy, plan to come in over the dam, over the lake, and then along the corridor, next left for final :-) Which airport you take might also be depending of where you come form and where you are going to. If it gets too hard, I'll scrub in a New York minute. what's a NY minute? #m -- http://www.declareyourself.com/fyr_candidates.php http://www.subterrane.com/bush.shtml |

It's located in NW corner of the field west of threshold of 19R. There shouldn't be any fees for a short passenger pickup, but call first. Arriving: Check ATIS 40 mi out132.4, contact approach control on 125.9 from the south or west, 119.4 from the east for clearance into Class B. Expect vectors over the numbers of runways 25 for landing on runway 19R. Check your Flight Guide, or Jepp plates for more detail. When you drop your passenger off back at the Exec Terminal, there's a free shuttle bus. |

Martin,
what's a NY minute? A very, very short minute. A Midwesterner is on his first trip to NY. As he wanders through the city, he is looking for the sights to see. He stops a passer-by and asks: "Excuse me, Sir, could you please tell me where the Empire State Building is, or should I just go f... myself?" That's New York! -- Thomas Borchert (EDDH) |

Funny example! Reality is that the mythical NY'er would have turned away and been down the street before the punch line. When this midwesterner (Pittsburgh) moved to NYC I was a bit put off by people walking away from me when I asked directions. I soon learned to shorten my requests to "where's the Empire State Building" and found that people would not only tell me but were as likely to walk down the block with me to make sure I wouldn't get lost.. Pretty soon I learned to ignore "excuse me" requests too because that's how scam artists and beggars start their pitch. Now that I'm 'down south' in NC, I've had to unlearn what I grew up with in Pittsburgh and learned in NY. The key here is to start with a "How are you this morning", then wait for an answer, then ask for help. Shortening any of this dialog marks you as one of those damn NYers. In the end, people seem the same but they just like to move at different speeds. |

The first time I was in NY my friends and I were lost and were looking for something to eat (on the way to a Yankees game). We were walking by a firehouse and decided to ask for help: us: Howdy! (pause) How's it going? firemen: (wierd look) ok us: Can you help us out? We're looking for a decent place to eat, pizza maybe and directions to the subway. We're going to the Yankees game. firemen: You're not from around here are you? us: uh...no. We're from California. Why? firemen: Because you talk to slow. And too nice. us: errr... firemen: Here in NY you say "Yo- where's the nearest pizza joint" So they then proceeded to give us a brief tutorial on how to act in NY. Nice guys, in a NY sort of way : ) -lance smith |

The Las Vegas Executive Terminal is a good place to meet. It is on the
strip side of the field, behind MGM. They have a landing fee, but it is waived with gas purchase. But gas is expensive ($3.80/gal). So they get your money one way or another. The Executive Terminal also has a shuttle that will run you around and a little deli. jerry "Casey Wilson" wrote in message ... any reason why it has to be LAS? and not HND or VGT?
where are you coming in from... be prepared to pay a bit more in fuel at LAS rather than VGT or HND.. the two "FOBs" on the field cater more to "higher type aircraft" but there are all types around.. Most prefer Eagle on the north end, and it is walking distance to the MGM Grand.. $ignature is nearer the south end (Rwy 1-19). BT "Casey Wilson" wrote in message ... Most prefer Eagle on the north end, and it is walking distance to the MGM Grand.. My passenger is an unescorted young person flying into LAS from NoCal. He's a smart kid and I think explicit instructions for moving about on airport shuttles is reasonable but I share the parent's concern about transfer from LAS to either VGT or HND. I'll be flying down from St. George, Utah, KSGU, with my grandson for the pickup. It looks like an easy flight. Mr. Dighera's notes look pretty good to me. I'll be calling the Executive Terminal tomorrow to find out about shuttle's. I intend to ask them a favor and maybe run over to the terminal and pick the lad up. It will probably work out that we'll have him hang out at the terminal. We'll park the airplane at Exec and go over and get him ourselves. My 'wet' rental is good for $3.75/gal, so buying gas isn't a big deal -- although I don't think I'll burn ten gallons. I guess one of the motivations for making the run is because my grandson asked me if he could go along -- how can you turn that down -- especially when his mother is the one that suggested it. Now if the weather will just cooperate...... Thanks all for the replies, Casey |
