Default MPH to KTS

Whats the conversion off hand to convert?
Our airplanes have MPH on the AS gauge, and our checklists have kts
(ie Best Glide, 65kts)

Multiply knots by 1.15 (15% more) to get speed in MPH.

Or, you can do simple math: move the decimal over one to the left, add
half more, then add amount to knots.

In other words, 65 knots - move the decimal over equals 6.5, or just 7.

Half of 7 is 3.5, or just 3 (since I rounded up before, round down
now). 7 plus 3 equals 10.

10 plus 65 equals 75. - that's your approximate speed in MPH

Or, if you have your E6-B, look it up there.

KTS = MPH * 0.87
MPH = KTS * 1.15
:-)

Whoops, I just pulled out my E6-B and noticed it doesn't have the
conversion already printed. No bother, do this:

On the E6-B, set up a ratio where the inside scale is knots and the
outside scale is MPH. To do this, move the wheel so the inside 60 is
aligned with the outside 69.

Now, any speed in knots inside will align with its MPH equivalent on the
outside.

Are you re-writing your checklists? I rarely pass up a chance to reduce
cockpit math.

Sure. It's easy.

First take the square of the speed (in knots).
Then add 56 times the original speed, add 784,
and then add another 32% to that total. Take the
square root, subtract 32 and there's your answer!

It IS silly that anyone old enough to be a pilot doesn't know how to convert
from MPH to knots. But your answer was just plain *mean*.

Not that I didn't enjoy it.

Calculate the waiter's tip on your KTS to get MPH. Always remember for a
given speed, the MPH number is more that the KTS because statues are taller
that knots.

If you fly by the Mach meter you don't have to convert.

Does a Mach meter display speeds that low?
