FAR 61.58 regarding HpH 304SJ,Jonker JS1-CJT, et al jet sustainers

Under current FAR 61.58, paragraph (f) states:

" (f) This section will not apply to a pilot authorized by the Administrator to serve as pilot in command in experimental turbojet- powered aircraft that possesses, by original design, a single seat, when operating such single-seat aircraft."

Questions:

Is it correct to assume the 304SJ and the JS1-CJT are imported as experimental sailplanes?

FAA Admininstrator would be FSBO? What would be criteria for district FSBO to "authorize" pilot?

For now, all US jet sailplanes are experimental. All single seaters are exempt from the 61.58 yearly proficiency check. As for what is required to fly one, there isn't a good standard yet. I fly my Salto with only a glider rating and motorglider endorsement. The BonusJet requires an LOA (partly due to my ability to provide training for hire). It will depend somewhat on the whims of your FSDO (and insurance company).

I do have a Letter Of Deviation Authority (LODA) to provide jet transition training in the BonusJet. Come out to Moriarty and experience some great soaring while learning the nuances of flying a jet sailplane. You actually get it listed on your pilot certificate like a type rating.

Thanks Bob for your response. No doubt the authorization "by the Administrator to serve as pilot in command" is abstract as opposed to specific and will vary from one FSDO to another.
