I watched the whole thing on NASA TV. I just stumbled on it as I was
channel surfing and watched everything from the B-52 taxiing at Edwards to the recovery. It hit supersonic right after the tail of the rocket cleared the B-52's nose. Very cool. Paul Davis "G.R. John
Bird traveled about 14 miles on the fuel it carried before it ran out and shut down. What would you do with a 14 mile bird? A lot of missiles do this ie. fast fuel burn to accelerate to say mach 5 in about 15 sec and then gliding (coasting might be a better term here) the rest of the way to the target. It's amazing how much momentum that much metal travelling 5000 mph will have. |
