I got my instrument rating about a few years ago at Hawaii Flight
Academy. It is on the Big Island (two locations, Kona and Hilo) and was Sporty's Academy - Hawaii at the time. It was a good deal. The price includes all flight and ground instruction, you must have passed the written before attending, you should also have your cross-country time flown. Tuition also includes the hotel room. The course is nominally 14 days. Instruction was first rate. Having experienced several flight schools over the years, I haven't encountered any as professional as Hawaii Flight Academy's. It is definitely an intense course so the more you can do to hone your flight precision before you go, the easier it'll be when you put the foggles on. A good (not just written test passing) understanding of the material also lets you concentrate more on the flying. The reason to go to Hawaii Flight Academy is the excellent training. You can enjoy Hawaii before or after your training and, if you travel with someone, they can enjoy the place while you're flying. Made it a lot easier to sell my wife on the idea. In foggles, Hawaii looks about the same as Nebraska. Two main differences. Once, my instructor had me pop the foggles off because we were flying over a whale. Even from the air, it was big. Also, off field landings are usually not feasible because of the volcanic nature of the islands. You will always be wearing an inflatable life vest because the engine out procedure would about 99% of the time be a ditching. Good luck.
