I had to look up BWB's word "eutrophication" in the title of his
well-written and fascinating narrative. As he used the word, it has to do with nutrients in the lakes sufficient to provide healthy ecosystems --- food like algae for organisms like protozoa, fish, and otters. Here in WNC where the clearcutting goes on apace to feed the hungry oriented strand board industry, it's "dystrophication," i. e., silting the streams and lakes and choking them with runoff, killing the fish and turning the lakes dark red. You can see it from the air as you fly over Rutherford County especially. Otherwise, flying over Rutherford County in the balmy spring air is quite pleasant, particularly down around Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, where movies like _Dirty Dancing_ and _Last of the Mohicans_ were made. |
