Some weeks ago I asked about a way to create maps to display airpsace zone
on a gpsmap76s. I have to say that I got very valuable input, and would like to thanks especially Rory O'Connor and Scott Byrd (from sci.geo.satellite-nav). Here is how I proceeded: I used the files located at http://www.zelpo.sk/sport/rogalo/gps_map/ (I live in France and for now on I am only interested in french airspace) so I did some clean up. I created mp (Polish format) files using gpsmapedit available at http://www.geopainting.com/en/ I also created more maps using ascii files in Polish format just put keying the coordinates. I ended up will four files, one for plain airspace zone, one for airport control zone, one for derogatory zone for gliders used at my location (one can be activated at a time, depending upon the wind direction, so I can switch it on or off by selecting it in the mapsource menu) The files were compiled using tools available at location http://gps.chrisb.org/en/main.htm The gpsmapper author provided a fix in a couple of days after I sent him a message telling the transparent switch did not work properly, a fantastic response time for a freeware, thanks to him. I used sendmap (same location as gpsmapper) to upload the maps to the Garmin. Et voila The real advantage of this technic is that you can create and correct your maps using either a plain text editor or Gpsmapedit But I also have to admit that the process is time consuming. I now understand the post of Jim Kelly who switched to an Ipaq with winpilot. The process to create airspace zone on such device is far more easy, especially since files are already available on the net. Anyway I will stay with my gpsmap 76s for a while as it is a nice tool for a reasonable price (much cheaper than an Ipaq+winpilot) and map creation using the tools described above provide the functionnality I was looking for. Thanks again for your help. Gilles |
