It makes a big difference what you're towing with.
Previous post on Pawnees correct. Supercub, Scout, Citabria, and especially Cessnas a very different animal. My favourite was a Hudson mirror on a Supercub... if you you've never driven a Hudson, try a Studebaker. Know of a couple of electric adjustable mirror installations out there, for tuggies of different sizes. Experienced towpilots know what's going on from control position and feel. Still very worthwhile to watch the slack come out on the ground, and stop before the rope overruns.... For me, no reliable mirror, no tow. |

In a Pawnee, I just open the window and stick my head out to watch the rope on the ground. In Pawnee I like those big rectangular truck mirror (with 3 point
extra stay mount) in close to fuse just forward of window. Don't worry about the drag!!! I agree window open (exercise your neck) for take up slack and LOOK. I have done tens of thousands of tows in Pawnee and can remember doing all 83 tows in a day and on another day 78 - you could not do that in many other tow planes without being buggered at the end of the day.
