Is there a simple way to program the Garmin to handle in-flight route
instructions such as : "Pass 10 miles N of XYZ at 10,000 ft" or "Continue inbound to ABC, then the 131 radial to DEF..." I can make user waypoints, but it seems a little slow and awkward, especially in hard IFR. Any tricks? Thanks, Michael |

lets see.. I would remember the 10 mile restriction in my brain (and on my
note pad) while flying direct to XYZ... then direct to ABC... and then in VOR (OBS) mode tune and fly the 131 radial outbound from ABC.... I'd also check the charts to see if DEF is a "direct to" DEF. This is only from memory as I have not flown often with the Garmin 430-530-1000 systems. But have in the past. Does that mean continue my present heading and 10 from XYZ be at 10,000 feet, or does it mean find the waypoint that is 10 miles N on the 360 radial and pass that point at 10,000 feet? then direct to ABC... and then in VOR (OBS) mode tune and fly the 131 radial outbound from ABC.... I'd also check the charts to see if DEF is a "direct to" DEF. Woudn't it have to be direct given a radial? "Michael 182" wrote in message ... You can use either the NAV1 page or the FlightPlan1 page for this: Just before reaching XYZ and assuming XYZ is the waypoint to which you are currently navigating, roll your OBS to the 360 degree radial, then hit the GPS's OBS button. This will suspend waypoint sequencing and give you your distance from XYZ. The CDI will provide you the reference to remain on 360 degree radial. Scan the NAV1 or Flightplan1 page for the distance you have flown from XYZ. When you have crossed the 10 NM as determined by NAV1 or FLightplan1 page, then hit the OBS button to cancel OBS mode and return to waypoint sequencing. You may have to use the flight plan page and cursor down to the next waypoint, followed by the DIRECT-TO button. I would recommend downloading and installing the free GNS430 simulator, then trying this out: http://www.garmin.com/products/gns430/# You also could experiment with this during a VFR day using a nearby VOR. I can make user waypoints, but it seems a little slow and awkward, especially in hard IFR. Any tricks? I have done this for my home class C airport, where they commonly will issue the following instruction to IFR and some VFR aircraft approaching from the west: "Fly direct to the SYR VOR, depart SYR VOR on the 090 degree radial" -- Peter ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- |

Michael.. do not take the N/S/E/W literally..
maintain your current course.. 150 or direct to XYZ.. you are heading approx.. SSE (135being SE and 180 being S).. so when you are 10nm NNW or N you should be at the restriction given.. If you alter course to intercept the XYZ360010, you could be violated for not following the ground track given. BT "Michael 182" wrote in message ... Usually you get a crossing restriction referencing a point on your flight
plan, so in your case XYZ is in the 430's flight plan already. Go to the VNAV page and put in the distance and altitude from XYZ and your 430 will give you a Vertical Speed Required (VSR) on the Nav page to intercept the altitude at the specified point. I usually us the OBS mode to intercept and track radials but you need two GPSs or a second VOR reciever to identify the intersection of the crossing radials. If you get the same instructions frequently you may want to create a user waypoint. The problem then is remembering what you named it. Mike MU-2 "Michael 182" wrote in message ...
