Bob Buck?

I'm reading Robert Buck's book "North Star Over My Shoulder".

I started it because I've used his advice from "Weather Flying".

Well I got to page 43 and he descibes his early lessons as doing
stunting, where you pull the nose up and then do a tailspin.

A "tailspin?"

From a pilot that flew 747s? And he even described the Kinner engine
accurately, which I have experience with, in the same paragraph!!!

I'm going to read the rest of the book because of "Weather Flying".
And because I've already paid for the book.

But how...???

You're too young, It was frequently referred to as such in the 30s.
Haven't you ever heard of Tailspin Tommy a character in the Big Little
Books.

I just finished the book last week and had the same reaction to
"tailspin" as you. Overall Mr. Buck does a good job in relating his
extraordinary career in aviation. I liked Ernest Gann's book better
though.

common and correct terminology when Bob Buck learned to fly -- he is
excused. if you want to be bothered by word usage, there's plenty of
opportunity in this NG -- people regularly refer to pilot licenses, tickets,
commercial ratings, etc.

I didn't notice that. Still, it's a term I grew up with. Wasn't there
a Smilin' Jack character called Tailspin?
