Default Flying to Maryland Shore

Does anyone have any experience flying across the Washingon ADIZ?

I'm coming from the Midwest to the Eastern shore of Maryland next week,
which requires crossing Washington's ADIZ and B airspace.

I'll be under IFR, but I was wondering whether they sent IFR traffic around
the big ADIZ or through? If I have to go around, it'll most likely mean a
gas stop.

TIA.

If you are IFR you will be routed by ATC when you get near Washington,
likely right through the ADIZ... Sit back and enjoy the ride...

Just cuz I'm curious (haven't read the NOTAMs so don't know), I know
you have to call a specific FSS and file an "adiz plan" if you're VFR
and going through the area, but if you're coming in IFR do you just
file a normal IFR plan and the airspace is transparent, just like any
other IFR plan automatically deals with going through non-E airspace?

Quite a bit.

The ADIZ is mostly transparent to IFR pilots since the ADIZ requirements
(two-way comms with ATC, unique transponder code, flight plan) already
apply. There is the smaller FRZ (~15 mile radius) inside the ADIZ which you
will not be allowed into (unless you know the secret handshake), but that's
a much smaller detour than swinging around the ADIZ.

You don't have to call any particular FSS. However, the further away
from DC your ADIZ is, the less likely they are to know how to do it
right.

The one thing that applies is that you MUST file your IFR plan with the
FSS. DUATS is not technically permitted IFR or VFR for ADIZ travel.

Weather you have to fly around or through will depend more on the time
of day or day of week not the the type of plan. It will depend of on the
controllers load of "big iron".
You only have to file with specific FSS if you are going to penetrate
the FRZ. You only need to file an IFR plan with an FSS.

That is true. I have flown around weather, I have flown through weather,
but never was I aware that "weather" followed any man made schedule?

Never had that problem. I always file IFR plans that terminate or
transit through the ADIZ on DUATS. Never been a problem. I believe
you have to use FSS for flights originating in the ADIZ.
