Yesterday I displayed my glider at a large youth scouting event held at
the local airport. I spent the day seating kids in the cockpit, answering questions, and of course trying to keep the glider in one piece. As usual there were a few kids that asked some very insightful questions, but it was the comment of one that I found disturbing. One young man casually stated that the glider did not seem to have a lot of "protection". I was impressed that a young 10 year old would be so aware and concerned about the crash worthiness of my glider. When asked, "what do you need to be protected from?", he answered very seriously, "snipers". Another sign-of-the-times... Curt Lewis - 95 USA CFIG/ASEL Genesis 2 Blanik L33 Solo |

Curt,
Thanks for displaying your glider. You never know who gains a bit of insight into our sport. I had a CAP cadet help display a K-21 at an airshow and he brought a flight helmet for others to try on. He mentioned the glider was nuclear powered from a source 93 million miles away and the visor on the helmet would offer protection from the power source. |

That=B4s normal Lewis.....my son at age 10 wanted to sleep in bed with
the wife and I along with a shotgun to protect us from the boogie man. The sniper came from the fact you=B4re flying the Batplane. Maybe it's not such a "sign-of-the-times". Steve Wittman was shot at by
some inbred redneck and had his fuel tank holed flying "Bonzo" back to Oshkosh from the Miami Air Races. And that happened in 1950......... |

With all that video game training, the new breed of idiot may be better at
hitting a moving target than the 1950's version was. Ray Warshaw "Shawn" sdotcurry@bresnananotherdotnet wrote in message . .. wrote: Maybe it's not such a "sign-of-the-times". On the plus side, I'd wager (money, not my hide) that the average idiot shooting at aircraft isn't as good a shot in '05 as they were in '50. Lots more vets, hunters etc. Shawn |
