Hello Kevin,
For touring motorglider, I urge you to consider the Xenos motorglider by Sonex. It is not a four thousand dollar machine, but you shall get a good product for your money and you shall add value by your manufacturing of it. Much pre-fab, precut, prebent leading edges of airfoils, tho it qualifies as 51 percent builder made aircraft for Special Airworthiness Certificate - Experimental Amateurbuilt. It is an aluminum (same kind as C-47 aluminum very corrosion resistant) aircraft, taildragger, Titanium legs fixed gear, direct drive aero engine, 2 sitter side by side, with FX-61 Aerofoil, L/D 24:1 with airplane flying ability and spoilers. Good cross country airplane capability as well. Span is 45 ft '8 in. in Utility form, and 39ft 4 in. if flown in Aerobatic performance form. Max gross wt is 1050 lbs with 16 gals fuel aboard ( your choice, auto fuel or 100LL Avgas ) . There, at Sonex-Ltd. they offer fine airplanes or motorgliders made of 6061-T6 aluminum, with complete kits for fast building. I know. Been there, saw that, at Oshkosh Wisconsin Wittman field, attending the Sonex building class. Having a glider already, I have selected and have received the plans set and complete kit for a Sonex airplane. While in Oshkosh, I marvelled at their Xenos motorglider as well. Fine product, wonderfully engineered. You may see it at Oshkosh when you attend a Sonex (Waiex, Xenos) builders class or go to visit anytime. The Sonex kit comes looking like this shown at this url as follows , and the Xenos comes the same, just longer wings and narrower chord with spoilers on top surface of wings. Yes wings are removable on all the Sonex aircraft and can be trailered. I shall build a trailer for mine. Xenos (or Sonex or Waiex) can be powered with either AeroVee kit engine 4cyl direct drive (vw based but greatly improved from a vw engine) 80hp, Jabiru 2200 80hp 4 cyl direct drive Australian aero engine, or Jabiru 3300 120hp 6 cyl Australian aero engine. For picture of the kit layout as it comes, view http://sonex-ltd.com/costs.html For the Xenos, costs of the kit airframe, engine mount and gear and tires and wheels will be US $19,695 , then add engine and instruments when you get to that point of need. It is propelled by a Sensenich prop, fixed pitch with small chord. Consider it. Here is a picture of the Xenos motorglider http://sonex-ltd.com/new.html You can order a complete airframe fast build complete kit, predrilled, all ribs built, laser precut pieces all labelled . Xenos at http://sonex-ltd.com/xenos.html If one is a glutton for work, then one build from plans alone buying some parts from Sonex, tho I recommend the complete kit approach. Kindest regards, Jim Culp USA GatorCity FL Asw-20C Sonex airplane complete kit Nr 855 whereby I have put my money where my mouth is. |
