A runway for a small town airport is .8 miles long. What is the regulation
for maximum height of a structure .9 miles beyond the end of the runway? Given a cessna 170b, for example, the plane could travel that .9 miles in as little as a half a minute. A max rate of climb of 660fpm would give it 330 ft of elevation. What is the possibility of building a tower or wind turbine there? Thanks JB |

Talk to the airport commission, county board, local land owners ect....
somebody will have a copy of the local "avigation easements" that have been acquired from the surrounding property owners. I've gone through the process with land we owned next to a Wisconsin airport. It listed to what extent we could park equipment, build, or maintain trees along each side of and near the ends of the runways and extending outwards and upwards from the runways. In our case it began with a "master plan" and then the land owners were contacted, concerns taken into account, then the plan was customized for the location and the neighbors specific operations... to an extent. For instance we were allowed to operate a moveable irrigation system near the runway, but could not park it there, it could only move through the area. Also we were required to remove any trees over 30' tall on land just across the road from the main runway. I've got copies of the plans around here somewhere, I would think most adjacent land owners in your area would also have such info from the FAA. Jim "J" nospamplease wrote in message ... Thanks for sharing your experience. I've heard all land is valuable, but at
the end of a runway, strip mined twice, (no timber) with no current access road and a likely screwed up water table in a declining back woods under educated over aged town of 6000 people *deep breath* I can't imagine any value over 'stinker'. I just dug out one of our maps from the Wisconsin DOT regarding one of their
easements on our property. Off each end of each runway there are clear zone easements with a slope of 20:1 that extend a distance of 637 off one runway and a distance of 1500' of the other end of the runway. Beyond that there is an "avigation" easement with a slope of 34:1 that extends 1600' beyond the clear zone easement on the approach end of the only runway with an instrument approach at this airport. The easements that the DOT "purchased" from us covered an area from 10 ft above to 50 ft above the ground over 13.86 acres. After negotiations, they paid us $5000 for the easement, the land itself later sold in 2003 for $42,000. It is a starting place. Contact the local FSDO safety
officer. A lot will depend on whether there is an IAP and even more if there is any commercial operation or particularly airline passenger traffic.
