All,
Has anyone ever flown in here? I've heard conflicting reports of being able to just walk over to the rim of the canyon. Does anyone know if it's possible and/or have suggestions? Thanks, Dan |

Thanks, Dan Hi Dan, According to what I read recently (I believe it was over at AirNav), you are not allowed to just wander over to the rim of the Canyon anymore. IIRC, you used to be able to at one time, but they no longer allow it. Now, I think you have to be part of a tour or have alternate permission. However, most who opined did write that the arial views in the vicinity of 1G4 are awesome. Where are you flying out of? I'm a club flyer based at Stellar Airpark (P19.) I don't see how anyone could be prevented from walking over to the rim. Maybe there might be a small fence near the airport, but if you walk far enough, the fence stops. I still recall walking through fairly thick forest on the South Rim when I came upon a clearing, and discovered that the clearing was in fact a 1000-foot drop off the edge of the Grand Canyon. I wonder how the first explorers to see the canyon felt when they stumbled upon it. -- Transpose mxsmanic and gmail to reach me by e-mail. |

The canyon is a national park, and there are walkways all along the rim, not to mention hundreds of miles of trails that go down into the canyon. I can't believe you can live in Chandler and be so mis-informed. Dean |

Last time I was there, access to the rim wasn't possible. They like you to take their bus tour, no doubt to top-up tribal funds. |

But we aren't talking about the entire canyon. Did you even read the original post? The OP asked about doing a specific thing from a specific airport: "Can you land at Grand Canyon West (1G4) and walk to the rim." From what I dug up, it would seem the answer is NO. If you don't want to believe me, go read the Goddamn posts yourself: http://www.airnav.com/airport/1G4/A#c And if you happen to know differently, why don't you say so instead of jumping down my throat? *PLONK* Jay Beckman PP-ASEL Chandler, AZ |

No **** Sherlock... Good response, Jay. After all the noise on this group lately with the sim discussions, I thought maybe there would actually be an interesting or informative thread. Guess not. I've never been to 1G4 myself, but I've heard the same thing - the Indians now charge for the tour as a source of revenue. Basically the same as the Havasupai canyon hiking permits - ain't nothin comes for free anymore. The comments on Airnav are consistent with this, although I see there's nothing there very recent.
