Planning another trip to the Arctic, I was offered a drum of SEALED
avgas 100LL that is supposedly "several years old" by an airport up North. I am not so much concerned about water, rust, sludge or any other impurities which can be filtered out. What I would like to know, however, is if avgas somhow chemically detiorates. Could it do harm to my engine, by burning too hot too cold or anything like that? Advise is appreciated! Gerd |

If the seller is reputable, i.e. you can trust that it is actually
avgas in the drum, it will be fine in your engine... denny gwengler wrote: Planning another trip to the Arctic, I was offered a drum of SEALED avgas 100LL that is supposedly "several years old" by an airport up North. Gerd avgas is designed for long life. it is stable and doesnt deteriorate. how many aircraft have you heard of that sat in a hangar for a period and couldnt be started due to avgas deterioration? none. my own aircraft has spent a year idle in the hangar on a number of occasions and always started without trouble after the experience. some fuels will settle out waxy components and some auto fuels deteriorate with UV exposure. if the fuel in the drum shows any sign of contaminants in it then refuse it otherwise it should be ok. .....ship it to me in australia and I'll use it for you :-) Stealth Pilot |
