Default 2-33 Questions

During the process of replacing the fabric on SGS2-33A S/N 258, two
weights were found in the glider. One, a lead weight of about one pound
located at the trailing edge of the elevator and another, a steel bar,
about 4.2 pounds, bolted to the bottom of nose ballast box. Both weights
are called out in the Maintenance/Parts manual but there is no
explanation of why they are required. Somewhere around S/N 500 these
weights were no longer required.

Now my questions...

1. Does anyone know why the weights are there.

2. Why did they disappear in later serial numbers

3. We are trying to keep the empty weight low, so has anyone been
successful in getting rid of the nose weight with a Form 337.

Many thanks,

Paul
ZZ
