Thats very sad,
in Germany - who really nothing is unregulated - flying gliders is allowed for 14 year olds and I know nothing about cases where this was a problem. If the flight instructor thinks his student is mature enough, why not? By the way in Germany you must be 18 to get a driver license! So the claim "If a person is not old enough to drive a motor vehicle they should not be old enough to operate an aircraft." doesn't count. I'm sure if driving school education is as good as as flight training, some young people would also be good drivers with 14. Especially if traffic on the streets would the same as in the sky. So please fight for the young gliding enthusiasts. How uninformed and misguided is that? The temptation is to use the words
"useless" and "politicians" in the same sentence, but that would be redundant. My oldest son soloed at 14 (that was 19 years ago) and by the time he was 17 and fully licensed had already learned things about responsibility, judgment, decision-making, self-reliance, friendship, etc. that have served him well and will continue to do so his entire life, even if he never pilots another aircraft. -- Peter Pryor illigitimus non-carborundum Vaughn Simon wrote: Our friends in New York are up to no good again: http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=A03424 http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/newsite.../070223ny.html Vaughn |

Likewise. My daughter soloed at 14 (glider) and 16 (power) and it did her a world of good in all of the categories that you mentioned. As it turned out, the flying kept her so absorbed that I believe she was 18 before she even bothered to get a learner's permit to drive. One of the most wonderful things about growing up in the aviation world were the wonderful mentors that took an interest and served as positive examples to her. In the soaring world, Mary Gafney and Bill Willis come quickly to mind. Vaughn |

Someone should point out how many astronauts started out as Harris Hill junior members. Also both the M&H guys started out at 14 there. |
