Included in a reply to my email to AOPA about the current state of FSS was a
list of FSS direct-dial numbers that are still active. Both AOPA and Lockheed Martin are now advertising these direct dial numbers as a work-around to the long hold times experienced when calling 800-WX-BRIEF. Lockheed Martin lists these direct dial numbers on their home page, he http://www.afss.com/ If you haven't already, consider copying these numbers and pasting them into a Word document that can be carried with you for those times you do need to phone FSS (in the car or in the airplane attempting to close or receive an IFR flight plan). -- Peter |

If the local FSS briefer is busy you aren't going to get kicked to the front of the line because you used a different phone number. -Robert |

If the local FSS briefer is busy you aren't
going to get kicked to the front of the line because you used a different phone number. No but you can manually go to a less-than-local briefer while the 800 number folks stay in line for their default briefer. Of course once Lockheed figures this out, they will start routing calls without regard to locality, and the gig will be up. And maybe there's no universe. for Email, make the obvious change in the address. |

If I am waiting to close an IFR flight plan at an uncontrolled airport or have a need to file and IFR flight plan for a Lifeguard mission while driving to the airport, there's no harm in trying. -- Peter |
