Sounds like just what my parents went through, except half a century
ago and in Europe. The family joke is that I'm the only legitimate
child my parents had (the others being born before the US would
recognize marriages between US nationals and Germans, although they
were all registered with the US consul as having an American father).

The only part I find a little fishy is the religious conversion first.
Some guys will do anything for a little nooky!
