![]() SPORTY'S, THIELERT ANNOUNCE SCHOLARSHIPS (http://www.avweb.com/eletter/archive...ll.html#196026) Both Sporty's Pilot Shops and Thielert Aircraft Engines have announced sizeable contributions to scholarships. Sporty's is supporting an educational effort near and dear to our hearts with a $5,000 contribution to the Ewald Scholarship Fund for budding aviation journalists. "Dave Ewald was admired by all who knew him, and it's fitting that his legacy lives on through these scholarships. Sporty's is pleased to participate in a program to train new, young journalists in Dave's memory," said Sporty's Founder/Chairman Hal Shevers. "Just as the general aviation community needs new pilots, mechanics and technicians, we need impassioned, qualified journalists to chronicle the events, products and services we offer." Thielert is helping to educate the next generation of engineers who will specialize in engine development. http://web.nbaa.org/public/news/pr/2...070517-042.php NBAA Announces Journalism Scholarship Honoring Dave Ewald Contact: Dan Hubbard at (202) 783-9360 or WASHINGTON, DC, May 17, 2007 – The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), in coordination with the family of Dave Ewald, announced today the David W. Ewald Journalism Scholarship honoring the memory of the long-time Business & Commercial Aviation publisher. "Dave was a publishing genius," said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. "When he helped create Business & Commercial Aviation, business jets and turboprops were relatively new to the market. Dave realized that people would use these airplanes differently than previous aircraft models, and would therefore need new information. Dave provided a forum where aviation journalists could educate the first generation of the business aviation industry, and NBAA is proud to offer a scholarship in his name for others pursuing journalistic excellence in their careers." Ewald spent nearly 50 years serving the business aviation community as a magazine publisher and industry spokesperson. He most recently was a partner in Smooth Propeller Company in Missouri, founded in 1988 as a magazine advertising sales and publishing firm specializing in aviation and other special interest information services. In 1952, Ewald participated with his employer, Aviation Age magazine, in the first NBAA Annual Meeting & Convention to host Exhibitors. In 1958, he helped create Business & Commercial Aviation, and in 1989, he co-founded Flight Training magazine. In subsequent years, Ewald was involved in launching a number of other special-interest publications including journals for NBAA. In 2003, NBAA's Board of Directors selected Ewald as the recipient of its NBAA First Century of Flight Award. The award recognized Ewald and other industry leaders for their significant contributions to the advancement of aviation since the advent of powered flight. The David W. Ewald Journalism Scholarship will be offered to a high school student planning to study journalism or a college or university student already in an accredited journalism program. When available, applications will be published on the NBAA web site at www.nbaa.org/scholarships, and the deadline for entries will be July 15, 2007. The first scholarship recipient will be announced at the Media Kickoff Breakfast during the NBAA 60th Annual Meeting & Convention on September 25 in Atlanta, GA. Contributions to this scholarship fund may be made payable to NBAA and sent to the David W. Ewald Scholarship Fund, c/o NBAA, 1200 Eighteenth St. NW, Suite 400, Washington DC, 20036-2527, (202) 783-9000. # # # http://web.nbaa.org/public/education/scholarships/ NBAA Scholarships NBAA offers several scholarships to promote professional development and business aviation careers.
