I've read here that it's hard to get a blanket
'one size fits all' solution to adapting military helmets to civilian radios. I spent about 15 minutes on the phone with 'Flight Suits' (www.flightsuits.com) answering their questions about what I have and what I wanted to do with it. A small box of parts arrived yesterday, and after about 30 minutes with a screwdriver I have an HGU-33 helmet with a boom mike that plugs into the oxygen mask receiver on one side. Checked it out this morning with a Microair 760 radio and it works great. They were very pleasant to deal with, too. It wasn't cheap, but it was easy, cheaper than a new helmet, and I get to keep the liner that's molded to my fat skull. If anyone's looking for a way to adapt a helmet, I'd recommend this place. They didn't by some wild chance include a schematic with it, did they? No, sorry. Really what it turned out to be was rewiring the helmet. I replaced the earphones (just the...uh...'speaker' part, not the heavy plastic cups) and bought microphone. I also got a prewired harness to hook it all together. I probably could've gutted a headset and gotten the same stuff, but a) it was cheaper than a decent headset, and b) the mic has a bayonet mount that plugs into an oxygen mask receiver - I'd've had to get that anyway. I've still got the old parts if I ever need to convert it back, but that's not likely. Dave 'up chit' Hyde |
