Saw one this weekend in a Gar Wood speed boat-circa 20's/30's. Huge
thing with 2 plugs per cylinder, 891 cu in and 316 HP. Layout looks a lot like the WWII Rolls Royce V12. Just curious if anyone knows if this engine started life as an aircraft engine and was later modified for speed boats. Seem to remember a V12 Liberty engine. thanks |

I've also heard of a few Hispano powered boats from that era. You might do
well to research Garr Wood and his boats. I've seen photos of them in several books. They are absolutely beautiful works of art. And they're woodwork doesn't suffer the indignity of being covered by fabric like airplanes do. |

There is one on Lake Geneva, WI, powered by a V-12 Curtiss Tornado engine, an engine I ahd never heard of before. The Wrigleys own this one and it still comes out on occasion. Saw the Scripps this past weekend on display in Lake Geneva-this one is supposedly 1 of 2 and is owned by Gage Marine. |
