What's my hump? - IL-76.jpg (1/1) [31K]

An Il-76 with a box above the forward fuselage. Anybody know what it's for?
(the box, that is, rather than the Candid)?

The picture comes from an article about Il-76 deliveries being resumed in
2011 but, given the Aeroflot markings, I assume it's an old photograph.

Hard to say. Some type of experimental radar is a possibility. Or, perhaps
even some form of laser or energy based weapon.

That would be my guess.

Il-82 (Il-76VKP)
Il-82 - Airborne Command Post/communications relay aircraft, (alternative
designation - Il-76VKP-'version65S').

Its a roof rack! You know like the little pods that people put on their
vans to hold all their crap when they go on vacation..................
