Others will probably tell you more, but as a start, It was Bu. N0 42-73345, coded G2-Q from 7PG (Pursuit Group?). Crashed during a training flight from Chalgrove on 11/09/45. Regards Pat Macguire |

Aircraft was F5E the photo recon version of the P-38 ================================================== ====================== == Sometime during late 2003 or early 2004 the crash site of F5E Lightning 44-24229 on Plynlimon,Mid Wales was attacked by souvenir hunters who used hack saws to remove the supercharger and several smaller parts from the crash site including a wing flap. The removal of these parts was carried out without the permission of the landowner or the MOD. A reward is now being offered for information on the whereabouts of the parts removed. The aircraft crashed On September 11th 1945,the pilot Lt Xenophen E.Eugenedes was killed. The wreckage of the aircraft was left on the crash site and has been regarded for many years as a memorial to the pilot. The crash site is remote, the nearest vehicle access being over two miles away and the weight of the parts removed is considerable, the supercharger alone weighs over 100lbs. obviously those responsible were organised and went equipped. ================================================== ====================== === 7th Photo Recon Group, 27th Photo Squadron,, 8th Air Force |

Regards Pat Macguire Pat The serial you gave (42-73345) falls right into a group of numbers allocated to B-24J production, not P-38 or F-5. Bu NO is a US Navy ID. other than that, the data appears correct.. G2-Q is the proper ID for an aircraft from the 7PG which is the 7th Photo Recon Group, and G2 sez its the 27the Photo Squadron.. the date is correct, and the home field..for the 7/27 photo recon a that time period.. |
