SSA is pleased to announce the activation of a new feature for SSA
members that is available exclusively on the SSA's website, www.ssa.org. With the click of a button, SSA members may now access previous issues of Soaring Magazine published more than 12 months ago. The years 1999 - 2008 are currently available through this online archive. Additional issues will be posted weekly until the project is completed and all past issues of Soaring (other than those published in the past 12 months) are included in this library. Because of copyright protections for recent issues of the magazine, when the library is completed, it will be the most comprehensive online source for past issues of Soaring. There are also some features available only through this official SSA archive and that are not available in any other online Soaring magazine library. First, when you peruse the archives we hope you will be pleased with the "magazine reader" viewer that allows you to navigate through each issue, turning the pages as though you were reading a printed magazine. If you prefer, you can also download the entire issue at one time in PDF format and either print the magazine or review it at your leisure. Another feature we think SSA members will find hugely valuable is a special search engine that forms the cornerstone of the archive project. Seeking particular information will no longer take hours of thumbing through back issues to find something. Instead, you can type in a keyword or phrase and the search engine will give you a list of all issues in which the search words appear. You can use this feature to search for information in a single issue or in the entire library of past issues. There is also a menu available to help guide you through the issues. The archive can be accessed by SSA members directly at http://www.ssa.org/magazine/archive/, or from the SSA website (http:// www.ssa.org) by selecting the "Soaring Magazine Archive" menu item. Because this website feature is available only to SSA members, to access it you must log in, using your SSA member number and password. If you have not already gotten a password to use the "members only" features of the website, click on "login help" on the SSA homepage. As noted above, the years 1999 - 2008 are currently available and the intent is that additional years will be added weekly until all but the most recent 12 months are loaded into the archive. (FYI, the search engine requires that the magazine be scanned using an OCR quality scan that takes more time and care to create, which is a major reason the project has taken longer to bring active than originally anticipated.) The SSA wishes to thank Titian Scholtemeyer, who put in untold hours developing this benefit for our membership, along with Doug Easton, Micki Minner and the SSA staff for making this project a reality. Special thanks are also owed to SSA member David Robertson of Ray Township, Michigan, who made an exceptionally generous financial contribution to SSA to help in the costs of developing this project. This will be presented at the SSA convention. Frank Whiteley |
