Each day the task includes a steering turnpoint to line the gliders up
with the active runway. Sometimes the steering point has a radius of 1000m (1km) and sometimes it has a radius of 2km. I tried to find an association between runway in use, or task type, and the radius but have found none. Why does the radius change. Surely not a deliberate trap for the unwary? Andy |

It is 1km for Racing Tasks and 2km for Area Tasks now. Might have been
different on the first dayay it was used. Regards Marcel MD, 18m Class |

Andy They are also setting 2km on some racing tasks. The idea is to separate classes. For example is 15 meter is coming in straight from the south, they get a 1 km circle. Then if 18m is coming in from the west they get a 2 km circle, so that they're not turning exactly where 15m is coming through. John Cochrane BB |

I guess nobody minds that these are illegal Racing Tasks.

The Observation Zone of a Turn Point is the airspace in a vertical cylinder of 500 m radius centered on a Turn Point. which appears to give no to option to change the radius. |

There is commonly some room in the IGC system to permit some local rules. As a way to keep the groups apart, this seems to make good sense and would have no meaningful affect on the competition. There is commonly some room in the IGC system to permit some local
rules. Local procedures, yes. Local rules, no. Picture a pilot, whose first language is not English, and whose glide computer assumes that the Turn Point radius for a Racing Task is 500 meters, as per Annex A. The pilot misses or misunderstands the 1000 meter radius declared at the Briefing. Now imagine that it is raining on the Turn Point. The pilot pushes in to 500 meters and winds up landing out. Everyone else makes the turn at 1000 meters and completes the Task. The pilot complains to the Director, who rules that the pilot should have paid more attention at the Briefing. The pilot then protests the ruling, claiming that an illegal Task was called. In that situation, I would not like to be a member of the Jury. |
