Pennsylvania has always been a real pain regarding anything with motor
vehicles - I have bad experiences going back to the 1960s to prove it! With respect to glider trailers, you either need (1) a properly signed title from PA (or another state) AND a bill of sale or (2) a paper trail that shows conveyance of possession going all the way back to the manufacturer. I've done it both ways, once for each of the glider trailers I've bought. It helped that I didn't deal with a store front "get your tags here" operation, but rather a guy recommended by a car collectors (who is always buying and selling things having dubious provenance). You might find it easier registering the trailer in New Mexico, rather than dealing with Pennsylvania. But then, I have no experience with New Mexico's DMV! grin -John On Sep 11, 8:52 am, blackcat wrote: Cannot get temporary PAMVD license tag for Sailplane Trailer delivery from Pennsylvania to New Mexico. Help!- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Do you have a current title and registration for the trailer? In New Mexico, for registering the trailer, there will be a trailer inspection to check the vin# against the current registration/title, and there must be a "proper" Bill of Sale. The form is online. In the past I have been unable to get a temp tag for bringing a sailplane/ trailer into the state. Once in the state you can get a 30 day tag while any problems with titles/registration are being cleared up. Unfortunately, the best bet may be to borrow a plate for transport. |

Take the plates off and claim it is from Utah. No registration required for light trailers. |

Aha-- that probably bears on the problems my partners and I had long ago when we built a trailer from a kit we bought from Frank Kelsey in Utah. He delivered the kit to us here in Colorado with no vehicle paperwork of any kind, and we had a helluva time getting plates for it. IIRC, one of us had to become the "manufacturer" and stamp a serial number (this was before the VIN standard) on the drawbar, then issue a bill of sale to the partnership. Not long after that, the drawbar broke (Kelsey being more of an expert on aircraft than on motor vehicles), and we had to stamp the number again. rj |

Cannot get temporary PAMVD license tag for Sailplane Trailer delivery from Pennsylvania to New Mexico. Help! In New Jersey, the key words turned out to be "home built utility trailer". This was for a 1981 Komet coming in from Florida without prior bills of sale or registration. Now, NJ didn't require a physical inspection of said "home built utility trailer" which made this painless indeed. Can't say for sure whether this would work in PA, but a direction worth at least exploring. P3 |

P3 Another key phrase in most states is "made from materials on hand" which does not require possession of receipts. "Materials on hand" might be construed to be parts from an old Komet trailer which somehow resembles an actually functional Komet Trailer. BTW, if your state requires a metal VIN number tag for your new "home built trailer", most pet stores have machines which will stamp anything you want to say into a brass dog tag for $1. A dog tag in the shape of a bone with four holes looks very official when riveted to a trailer tongue. |

Cannot get temporary PAMVD license tag for Sailplane Trailer delivery from Pennsylvania to New Mexico. Help! I picked my sailplane and trailer up in Fairfield when I bought it. It had no tag and I had no trouble towing it westward on the turnpike all the way to Wisconsin. I didn't even consider a temporary tag. Sounds like the small fine associated with a ticket (very likely not to happen) might be cheaper and/or less hassle than actually getting the temporary tag. |
